Frequently Asked Question

How do I create an annotation
Last Updated 4 days ago

To create an annotation on a web page, first make sure you are signed in. (You can do this by hovering the mouse pointer over the Anotato icon in the top right corner: a tooltip will appear showing stating that you are signed in, followed by your User name and stating how many Create Credits and Forward Credits you have.)

Select a block of text from 10 to 100 characters that you want to comment on, by left-clicking, dragging and releasing the left mouse button. This will highlight the text you want to comment on. (We call this the "anchor text".)

Then, right-click on this highlighted text. This opens a dropdown menu called the "context menu".

From the context menu, select "Create Anotato Annotation" and either left-click or right-click on it. This will open the "Create Annotation" popup window.

The window shows:

  • The webpage text that you have selected at the top,
  • A text box into which you can type your annotation (up to 20,000 characters),
  • The number of Create Credits you have available and
  • A "Save Annotation" button.

When you have finished creating the annotation and are satisfied with it, click on the blue "Save Annotation" button. This will create the annotation and send the annotation to our servers, where it will be visible to other Anotato users, who go to that web page. You can then click on the X in the top right corner to close the Create Annotation window.

Creating an annotation will deduct one (1) credit from your Create Credits balance.

IMPORTANT: Do not click on "Save Annotation" until you have finished creating the annotation and are satisfied with it. We do not provide for interim saves. Once you click on "Save Annotation", your annotation is sent to our servers, where it will be linked to the anchor text and become visible to others. You can delete an annotation that you have created by clicking on the delete button, but this will not restore the Create Credit you used when you saved the annotation.
